Corundum was mined for the abrasive industry until 1900, Mica for its insulating properties. Other gems from Macon County Include, Amethyst, Garnet, Kyanite, Moonstone, and Quartz. Mined in Jackson County, Olivine is used in metallurgy. Marble, used for monuments, is mined in Cherokee County Valuable gemstones Aquamarine, Emerald, Tourmaline, & Amazonite are found in Mitchell County. Copper was mined from Ore KNob in Ash County until 1962. Feldspar found statewide is used in glass making and ceramics. The pink and green gem Unakite is found in Madison and Mitchell County. Smoky Quartz is found in Alexander Co.
